Presidential Speech - Sunday, 15th August 2010.

This is a speech I wrote for a President of a Club who wanted to incorporate 3 key aspects:
1) The Indian Independence day
2) The Results of the Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking
and
3) The introduction to a EMCEE of the day.

Here is the script I wrote for him.

*********************************************

Ladies & Gentlemen,
The great peoples of India
Asked themselves a question
A very important question
Do we believe that we can get freedom?
(pause)
Do we REALLY believe that we can get our freedom?
And that question rallied a nation together
To break their bonds of fear
And on August 15th 1947
India was a free nation.

Today, Sunday, August 15, 2010
India celebrated 64th years of Independence
After nearly 200 years of British Rule & tyranny.
It was only because they believed in themselves.

Now where India and Indians around the world
were celebrating their freedom
Half way across the globe
In USA, another war was going on...

Not a war of bombs, guns and violence
But a war of words
And another question was being asked....
The question was -
“Who would become the 2010 – 2011 Toastmasters International World Champion of Public Speaking”

Ladies and Gentlemen,
On Sunday, August 15th 2010,
At the 79th Annual Toastmasters International Convention
Held at Palm Desert, California
The answer was given.

Out of 100,000 toastmasters
81 made it to the semi-finals.
And out of them...
Only 9 made it to the finals
And then after the dust settled...
Out of the 9
We got our winner...

In the third place
The winner was Linus Chang from District 73 Canterbury, Victoria, Australia

The second place winner was Robert MacKenzie from District 1, Los Angeles, California
with a speech titled ‘My Alter Ego’

And the 2010 – 2011 World Champion of Public Speaking
was David Henderson from District 55 San Antonia, Texas, USA
With the speech titled “The Aviators”

Ladies & Gentlemen,
Just as those life changing questions
Today, I want to ask you a similar question...
A very important question that may change your life.

Which one among you would like to be the next champion?

May be not a world champion...
But a champion of your own right
A champion who breaks his fears
A champion who takes one more step towards improvement
A champion who truly believes in himself

Ask yourself
Which one of you would like to be that champion?
(pause)
Because I believe we all can be that world champion...

As you contemplate on these words
I would like introduce to you someone
whom I consider a truly inspirational champion

A person whom can be best described
in the words of Edmund Hillary
The 1st man who conquered Mount Everest
who said
It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves

Friends
This is one person who has conquered his fears of public speaking
Who has conquered his mountains of learning
Who has conquered the inability to think clearly on his feet

Though he is soft spoke
His leadership abilities speak loudly by themselves

Ladies and gentlemen
Taking us through todays session
I hand over the lectern to a very able, capable and memorable personality

Please put your hands together and help me welcome
Toastmaster Praveen.
