Evaluation Techniques
by DTM Mohammed Murad
6th December 2010
1) Murad started his speaking session by relating how he came to Lagoon Toastmasters.
2) Everyone evaluates everyone else based on their perception of what is good or can be improved upon.
3) Whenever we evaluate, we evaluate other based on certain norms
4) Most of us evaluate others based on what our clubs teach us or what the standards the clubs have taught us.
5) We should realize that the club evaluation may not be the best method.
6) We need to understand that we should change and improve our standards so that we don’t evaluate others just based on Toastmasters standards but on standards and tips which can be followed in different spectrums of their life – a global perspective.
7) The format for evaluating others should be to evaluate with a difference – the difference which should be focused upon the improvement and benefit the speaker.
8) Normally, we follow a boxed pattern - body language, vocal variety, speech content.
9) Murad stated whatever he was presented was not going to change the standard time-tested structure of evaluation
10) What makes a winning evaluation is the ‘extra’ knowledge / points of wisdom the speaker can evaluate.
11) The question was asked – What would benefit the speaker the most? Answer – Changing the mind set.
12) Do not be there to impress the audience or to show off.
13) The evaluation process starts a long way off – Way before the meeting
14) He gave the example of speakers who have prepared 3 months in advance.
15) He encouraged the club to have pre-assigned roles of evaluation in advance.
16) He didn’t encourage last minute hot seat evaluation.
17) He suggested the following process to ensure that Evaluation was done properly
A. Change your mind set – To benefit the speaker.
B. Read the manual.
C. Find out what the speaker wants and how you can help him.
D. Never ask a new speaker what are the things you should be looking for.
E. If the speaker performs in front of you before (previous speech), keep a note and find out areas where you can help him.
F. Read the objectives and the notes for the evaluator + the questions on which the speak will be evaluated.
G. What is it that you look for in the speech? – Remember the time, 2 to 3 minutes. State around 2 by 3 points.
H. Have a balance between what the speaker has done well and the areas where the speakers can improve.
18) Murad felt that the praise & points of improvement need not be ‘balanced’ or ‘equally’
19) If the EXCOM made sure there is a check list for what to do / not to do in evaluation.
20) Do not thrash the speaker or judge the speaker & do not white wash the speaker.
21) He also felt that if a speaker (especially a Project 1) didn’t prepare and took the preparation lightly, then the evaluation must be honest.
22) One of the misunderstanding in many clubs – No one should be ‘forced’ to repeat a speech or become the ‘authority’ to approve a project.
23) Another misconstruction – Member who have finished a lower speech cannot evaluate a higher speech.
24) A question about the DTM project was being asked, to which the reply was that was a ‘These are different speeches’.
25) There are many advanced level speakers who don’t know how to evaluate others.
26) In a nutshell – Changing a mind set, prepare much more in advance, give the speaker the most beneficial evaluation, fill in the forms properly – they don’t write it properly,
27) Biggest mistakes in district – Removal of evaluation from the evaluation level.
28) As evaluators, we should not ask people to stand and give a standing ovation or applause as it eats into time.
Question that was asked.
1) How important is healthy criticisms.
• Answer - It all depends on the susceptibility of the speaker.
2) In your opinion should the speaker should be speaking TO the speaker or in the ‘third’ person.
• My personal opinion – Balance of both. When speaking personally for instance when complimenting example ‘Dr. Balan you did extremely well’ - when congratulating the speaker.
