How to Tell When Someone is Lying

How to Tell When Someone is Lying

Watching body language in addition to what is spoken might just save you from being a victim of fraud, or it could help you figure out when somebody’s being genuine. The police do this during an interrogation.

You have to learn the little facial and body expressions that can help you distinguish a lie from the truth. Here are some steps and tips to do so.

Learn to recognize deflections.
Usually when people are lying, they will tell stories that are true but are deliberately aimed at not answering the question you asked. If a person responds to the question “Did you ever hit your wife?” with an answer such as “I love my wife, why would I do that?”, the suspect is technically telling a truth, but they are avoiding answering your original question, which usually means they’re lying.

 Mind exaggerated details.
See if they are telling you too much, like “My mom is living in France, isn’t it nice there? Don’t you like the Eiffel tower? It’s so clean there.” Too many details may tip you off to their desperation to get you to believe them.

 We have illustrators, and manipulators.
Illustrators are a sign of telling the truth, this is when you are using your hand gestures to talk. moving your hands while you are talking is a sign of telling the truth. We also have manipulators. These, are the opposite of illustrators. An example of a manipulator can be playing with your wrist-watch, your jewelry, pulling on your ear lobe, etc. People who behave this way tend to be hiding something. The last, commonly unknown sign of hiding something is reptile tissue, most people have a reptile tissue in their nose, and it itches when you’re hiding something. But, before you assume that the person is hiding something, please establish a base line.

Base Line:
A base line is what someone acts like when they are not lying. You have to get a base line before you proceed with anything. Imagine you have a itch on your nose ever since you got out of bed. And someone thinks you are hiding something because you scratch your nose when answering a question…oops. What the person should have done is establish a baseline. To establish a baseline, you need to see the person when they aren’t lying. Try asking what their name is, and what they do for a living.

Look out for micro-expressions.
Micro-expressions are split second facial expressions that flash on a person’s face for a less than a 25th of a second and reveal the person’s true emotion underneath their facade. Some people may be naturally sensitive to them, but almost anybody can easily train to be able to detect microexpressions. Put focus to the upper and lower eyelids, the corner of the eyes, the mouth and the muscles surrounding the mouth, the eyebrows and forehead.

Shaking hands…
When you meet the person who you think is deceiving you, shake their hand. Take note of the temperature. When you are sure they are lying to you, pretend to be leaving and quickly grab their hand for a “Good-Bye” Handshake. If the temperature is colder, they are fearful.

Notice the person’s eye movements.
Contrary to popular belief, a liar does not always avoid eye contact. Humans naturally break eye contact and look at non-moving objects to help them focus and remember. Liars may deliberately make eye contact to seem more sincere. You can usually tell if a person is remembering something or making something up based on their eye’s movements. When someone is remembering details, their eyes move to the right (your right). When someone is making something up, their eyes move to the left. It’s usually reversed for lefties. (although not always true.)

Be aware of their emotional responses
Timing and duration tends to be off when someone is lying. If you ask someone a question and they respond directly after the question, there is a chance that the person is lying. This can be because they have rehearsed the answer, or they’re already thinking about the answer just to get it over with and move forward. A delayed answer can be a sign of lying. To tell the truth takes 2 parts of your brain at most, however to lie takes 6 parts of your brain. If the person has a long story then you can ask them to tell it backwards. Liars have trouble telling stories backwards, because in their mind they have rehearsed it forwards, but not backwards. And, as with smiling, facial expressions of a poor liar will be limited to the mouth area.
Pay close attention to the person’s reaction to your questions. A liar will often feel uncomfortable and turn their head or body away, or even subconsciously put an object between the two of you. Also, while an innocent person would go on the offensive (usually responding with anger, which will usually be revealed in a microexpression directly after you say you don’t believe them), a guilty person will often go immediately on the defensive (usually by saying something to reassure their facts, such as deflections).

Listen for a subtle delay in responses to questions.
An honest answer comes quickly from memory. Lies require a quick mental review of what they have told others to avoid inconsistency and to make up new details as needed. However, when people look up to remember things, it does not necessarily mean that they are lying.

Be conscious of their usage of words.
Verbal expression can give many clues as to whether a person is lying, such as:
Using/repeating your own exact words when answering a question
Not using contractions
Avoiding direct statements or answers (deflections)
Speaking excessively in an effort to convince
Speaking in a monotonous tone
Speaking in muddled sentences
Vocal pitch rising
Using classic qualifiers such as “I’m only going to say this once…”
Using humor and sarcasm to avoid the subject
Using Deflections (beating around the bush, not answering the question.)

Allow silence to enter the conversation.
If they’re lying, they will become uncomfortable if you stare at them for a while with a look of disbelief. If they’re telling the truth, they will usually become angry or just frustrated (lips pressed together, brows down, upper eyelid tensed and pulled down to glare).

Change the subject quickly.
While an innocent person would be confused by the sudden shift in the conversation and may try to return to the previous subject, a liar will be relieved and welcome the change. You may see the person become more relaxed and less defensive.

Watch his or her throat.
A person may constantly be either trying to lubricate their throat when he/she lies by swallowing or clearing their throat to relieve the tension built up. A person’s voice can also be a good lie indicator; they may suddenly start talking faster or slower than normal, or their tension may result in a higher-pitched speaking tone. See baseline info

Check the facts.
If you have the means, check the validity of what the liar is saying. A skilled liar might give some reason why you shouldn’t talk to the person who could confirm or deny a story. Perhaps the liar will infer that the person is particularly favourable towards the liar, or that the person would have little time for you. These are probably lies themselves, so might be worthwhile overcoming your reluctance and to check with the person you’ve been warned against.

Judge the character.
Most people tell the truth most of the time, and will cherish their reputation. Liars will ’sail close to the wind’ – they’ll artificially bolster their reputation so that they seem more credible or desirable than they actually are.

-          If you overhear a version of an anecdote that seems wrong, listen to those alarm bells – it might be a liar.

-          If someone takes the time out to ingratiate themselves with you out of the blue, it’s very flattering, but you have to ask, why are they doing that?

-          If John rubbishes or smears people more than normal, John is possibly putting in the groundwork so the audience are more receptive to John, and less receptive to the people who John has lied to – they’re discredited before they can say ‘John is a liar’.

Note -

Some people are extremely experienced or even professional liars. He or she has told their made up story so many times that they are actually believable, getting all their days, dates and times down perfectly! Sometimes, you may need to simply accept that you can’t catch every lie all the time.

If you do catch a lie, don’t reveal it to the liar; they will just adjust their story. Once you know one thing that is not true, you can use it to find more of the net of lies, and other nets of lies. Then decide which points you reveal and to whom.

A Blackberry addict discovers grassroot enterprise in India A smaller 'hole in the wall' you cannot imagine. A small fading sign  on the top saying "Cellphoon Reapars" barely visible through the street vendors crowding the Juhu Market in Mumbai. On my way to buy a  new Blackberry, my innate sense of adventure (foolishness) made me  stop my car and investigate. The 'shop' was not more than 6 feet by 6 feet. Grimy and uncleaned.  'Can you fix my Blackberry?" I asked the young boy. ' Of course I can, show me" " How old are you" 'Sixteen' Bullshit.
He was no more than 10. I am not handing my precious  Blackberry to a 10 year old in unwashed and torn T shirt and pyjamas! At least, if I buy a new Blackberry in a proper Store, they would extract my data for me. Something I have been meaning to do for over a year now. 'What's wrong with it?" 'Well, the roller track ball does not respond. It's kind of stuck and  I cannot operate it" He grabs it from my hand and looks at it
"You should wash your hands. Many customers have same problem. Roller  ball get greasy and dirty, then not working' Look who was telling me to wash my hands. He probably has not bathed  for 10 days. I leaned across to snatch my useless blackberry back.
" you come back in one hour and I fix it' I am not leaving all my precious data in this unwashed kids hands for an hour. No way. "who will fix it ?" 'Big brother' ' How big is 'big brother?' 'big .... umm ..thirty' Then suddenly big brother walks in. 30 ??? He is no more than 19. 'What problem ?'
He says grabbing the phone from my greasy hand into  his greasier hand. Obviously he never got trained in etiquette by any up-market retail store manager. 'Normal blackberry problem. I replace with original part now. You must wash your hand before you use this' What is this about me washing my hands suddenly ?? 19 year old big brother rummages through a dubious drawer full of junk and fishes out a spare roller ball packed in cheap cellophane wrapper. Original  part? I doubt it.  But by now I am in the lap of the real India and there is no escape as he fishes out a couple of screwdrivers and sets about opening my  Blackberry. "How long will this take?" " Six minutes " This I have to see. After spending the whole morning trying to find a  Blackberry service centre and getting vague answers about sending the  phone in for an assessment that might take a week, I settle down next  to his grubby cramped work space. At least I am going to be able to  watch all my stored data vanish into virtual space. Unknown strangers  crowd around to see what's happening. I am not breathing easy anyway.  I tell myself this is an adventure and I literally have to stop myself  grabbing my precious blackberry back and making a quick escape. But in exactly six minutes this kid handed me my blackberry back. He  had changed the part and cleaned and serviced the the whole phone. Taken it apart and put it together. As I turned the phone on there was a horrific 2 minutes where the phone would not come on. I looked at  him with such hostility that he stepped back. 'you have more than thousand phone numbers ?" 'yes'. 'backed up ?' 'no' 'Must back up. I do it for you. Never open phone before backing up' 'You tell me that now ?' But then the phone came on and my data was still there. Everyone watching laughed and clapped. This was becoming a public street show. A six minute show. I asked him how much for his effort and the new roller ball part. '500 rupees' He ventured uncertainly. People around watched in glee expecting a negotiation. Thats $ 10 dollars as against the Rs 30,000 ($ 600) I was a about to  spend on a new blackberry or manage a couple of weeks without my  phone. I looked suitably shocked at his 'high price' but calmly paid  him, much to the disappointment of the expectant crowd. 'Do you have an Iphone ? Even the new '4′ one ? 'no, why" 'I can break the code for you and load any 'app' or film you want. I  give you 10 film on your memory stick on this one, and change every  week for small fee' I went home having discovered the true entrepreneurship that lies at what we call the 'bottom of the pyramid'. Some may call it piracy, which of course it is, but what can you say about a two uneducated and untrained brothers aged 10 and 19 that set up a 'hole in the wall' shop and can fix any technology that the greatest technologists in the world can throw at them. I smiled at the future of our country. If only we could learn to harness this potential.
'Please wash your hands before use' were his last words to me.

Presidential Speech - Sunday, 15th August 2010.

This is a speech I wrote for a President of a Club who wanted to incorporate 3 key aspects:
1) The Indian Independence day
2) The Results of the Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking
and
3) The introduction to a EMCEE of the day.

Here is the script I wrote for him.

*********************************************

Ladies & Gentlemen,
The great peoples of India
Asked themselves a question
A very important question
Do we believe that we can get freedom?
(pause)
Do we REALLY believe that we can get our freedom?
And that question rallied a nation together
To break their bonds of fear
And on August 15th 1947
India was a free nation.

Today, Sunday, August 15, 2010
India celebrated 64th years of Independence
After nearly 200 years of British Rule & tyranny.
It was only because they believed in themselves.

Now where India and Indians around the world
were celebrating their freedom
Half way across the globe
In USA, another war was going on...

Not a war of bombs, guns and violence
But a war of words
And another question was being asked....
The question was -
“Who would become the 2010 – 2011 Toastmasters International World Champion of Public Speaking”

Ladies and Gentlemen,
On Sunday, August 15th 2010,
At the 79th Annual Toastmasters International Convention
Held at Palm Desert, California
The answer was given.

Out of 100,000 toastmasters
81 made it to the semi-finals.
And out of them...
Only 9 made it to the finals
And then after the dust settled...
Out of the 9
We got our winner...

In the third place
The winner was Linus Chang from District 73 Canterbury, Victoria, Australia

The second place winner was Robert MacKenzie from District 1, Los Angeles, California
with a speech titled ‘My Alter Ego’

And the 2010 – 2011 World Champion of Public Speaking
was David Henderson from District 55 San Antonia, Texas, USA
With the speech titled “The Aviators”

Ladies & Gentlemen,
Just as those life changing questions
Today, I want to ask you a similar question...
A very important question that may change your life.

Which one among you would like to be the next champion?

May be not a world champion...
But a champion of your own right
A champion who breaks his fears
A champion who takes one more step towards improvement
A champion who truly believes in himself

Ask yourself
Which one of you would like to be that champion?
(pause)
Because I believe we all can be that world champion...

As you contemplate on these words
I would like introduce to you someone
whom I consider a truly inspirational champion

A person whom can be best described
in the words of Edmund Hillary
The 1st man who conquered Mount Everest
who said
It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves

Friends
This is one person who has conquered his fears of public speaking
Who has conquered his mountains of learning
Who has conquered the inability to think clearly on his feet

Though he is soft spoke
His leadership abilities speak loudly by themselves

Ladies and gentlemen
Taking us through todays session
I hand over the lectern to a very able, capable and memorable personality

Please put your hands together and help me welcome
Toastmaster Praveen.

PLEASE DONT READ WHAT IS GIVE BELOW - EXTREMELY INDECENT STUFF...ONLY FOR 18+ AND INDECENT MINDED PEOPLE.

An article for Indecent people….

We live in a world where:
  1. People fall in love simply by chatting with someone unknown online
  2. Masturbation is considered and condemned as evil by those people who don’t like to openly show that they masturbate
  3. You decide your marriage partner through photographs pasted on websites after being altered by a Photoshop software and bullshit being written as a profile
  4. Sexual gratification can be reached by chatting with a ‘hot’ female over the phone – while the person at the other end is a over-weight obese 57 year mother of 4 trying to make ends meet
  5. A black man can become a President of a country because he promises change. And the only change he brings about is the construction of a mosque on ground zero.
  6. You cannot trust your own spouse without having a nagging doubt back of your head
  7. People magically “fall in love” during the honey moon phase and it magically fall “out of love” once the sexual hunger is replaced with disgusting mating sessions of fluid exchange
  8. We will talk crap and nonsense about others and what evil stuff they do. And we stop only when our own children do the same.
  9. Religion is used as a crutch by ignorant people to certify their spirituality
  10. Indecent, Fake, Sons-of-Bitches like YOU will read this but will not comment on it simply because they don’t want the world to know they read indecent stuff.

If the Bible were a historical document...Then read this...

If the Bible were a historical document...

Then can you tell me the answers these simple questions...

1) Adam and Even & the 'talking' snake - were the real or false? And whom do you think was present to record this 'historical' moment?
...
2) God 'rested' on the 7th day....Since when did 'God' need to 'rest'?

3) Noha managed to build a super boat...How did he actually manage to catch those animal - that also in pairs? Any data present?

4) At Sodom and Gommorrah, God sent his 2 angels as guests and reacted only after they went back to him and reported on the crime....Couldn't he have known this 'without' the secret espionage? And since when did historians record 'angels' coming to earth?

5) God 'spoke' to Moses in a burning bush & on top of a mountain....Why does he have to 'whisper' to a secret chosen chap....but can 'loudly' punish people at large? Who else was present to be a witness to know that it was 'God' himself who spoke to him?

6) The 10 plagues of Egypt - how comes there is not historical recordings of such an event EXCEPT in the bible?

6) God gave 10 rules to Moses. But didn't cover other crimes like 'homosexuality' which existed rampantly those days, prostitution, child abuse....I mean wheren't those crimes equally important? or were they not so important that he couldn't speak about them?

7) Samson has his 'super powers' in his hair???

8) Elijah went to heaven in a chariot with 2 horses on fire to heaven....how comes we dont see such phenomenon's today? Was there any historian to witness that event?

9) Jonah was in the belly of a 'big fish' for 3 days. Can you please point out a single fish where any man can duplicate such an amazing feat?

10) Why is the myth & storyline of Horace recorded 1280 BC which historians prove authentic as these beliefs were found by historians SAME as that of Jesus Christ who was born 1280 years later???
